How much space do I need for an in-ground pool?

Depending on the backyard configuration, you will likely need a minimum of 500 square feet for an in-ground pool. However, this number will vary according to factors like the shape of the property and local building codes, which typically require pools to be a certain distance away from the house and the property line. This will influence how much space you can use and where the pool may be positioned. Keep in mind that you will need an area around the pool for decking as well as other features you may want to include. Your builder will advise you of these and other considerations, and help you choose the pool shape, design, and water features that suit your property, lifestyle, and budget.

When is a good time to open/close my pool?

The earlier in the season you open your pool – and the later you close it – the more you will enjoy great water quality and optimal conditions, and have the most positive impact on overall appearance. Ideally, you want to have a backyard pool of water that is chemically treated, circulating and filtering – rather than sitting stagnant. While the water can be treated for winterization purposes and when you choose not to run your filtration system, you are obviously better off operating it than not. So, open your pool as soon as it makes sense for you and your family, and wait as long as possible before you close it for the season.

How often do I need to run my pool?

With today’s technology and variable speed/flow super energy efficient pumps, you can run your pool at a fraction of what it used to cost. This will allow you to circulate your system for longer periods of time and still save money on your electric bill. We recommend running your pool 12+ hours each day. It is especially important to circulate the system from 7am-7pm (or longer) for sanitation purposes and to help prevent the growth of algae, which thrives on sunlight. Ultimately, it would be great if you ran your pool all day, every day (or at least close to 24 hours for a diatomaceous earth filter, which needs a little time to “rest” each day).

Why do I need regular pool maintenance when my pool looks clean?

Just because a pool looks clear does not necessarily mean it is clean. Chlorine is reduced quickly during warmer weather and when more people are using your pool. Regular servicing and maintenance, including brushing and vacuuming, is required to keep your pool safe for swimming as well as to keep algae at bay. Between technician visits, make sure you maintain the correct water level, keep the skimmer baskets clean, and physically check the pool for signs of trouble or damage each day.
